Schola Cantorum on Hudson (SCH), the 18-year old choral ensemble based in New Jersey, has donated a block of its concert tickets to volunteers and staff of the American Red Cross of Northern New Jersey (ARCNJ) as a thank you for their Hurricane Sandy relief work.
The tickets, normally $25 apiece, are for this Sunday’s holiday concert of one of the world’s most beloved musical works, Messiah, which will be performed along with several other holiday favorites. The 35-member mixed voice choral ensemble will be joined by the Englewood Chamber Players and--in their premier performance--the Schola Phoenix Singers, a group of highly talented high-school singers from northern New Jersey and New York City.
“We wanted to do something to express our appreciation for all the hours that the Red Cross has put into helping members of the New Jersey community,” said Dr. Deborah King, artistic director and founder of SCH. “We are hoping it will be a treat for those who can come to enjoy some holiday music.”
Dr. King delivered the tickets to Jocelyn Gilman, community chapter executive of ACR Northern New Jersey at Red Cross headquarters in Fairfield. Gilman said receiving the tickets was a "wonderfully warm and generous offer." In response, King said bestowing the tickets felt like a much deserved act of thanksgiving, which she was "delighted to facilitate."
Schola will perform Messiah at 5 p.m. Sunday at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 73 South Fullerton Avenue, Montclair, NJ 07042. A second performance will be given at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 15, at the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd, 240 East 31st Street, New York City 10016.
