Arco Ensemble Comes to Gene & Shelley Enlow Recital Hall, 3/3

Gene & Shelley Enlow Recital Hall at Kean University (Enlow Hall) presents its third concert season featuring Arco Ensemble: Inspired & Inspiring on Sunday, March 3rd at 3pm. All concert attendees receive complimentary admission to a preconcert exhibition opening reception by artist Bonnie Maranz entitled "Radicalizing The Edge" in the Nancy Dryfoos Gallery at 1pm.

Arco Ensemble: Inspired & Inspiring

New Jersey's virtuoso string chamber orchestra performs a program of works composed by and for women including works by Jennifer Higdon, Gra?yna Bacewicz and Clara Schumann.

Conductor Anne Manson is recognized throughout the world for her conducting achievements. She was the first woman to conduct at the Salzburg Festival, where she led the Vienna Philharmonic. Ms. Manson is one of only three women to have been appointed Music Director of a leading American symphony orchestra, having served as Music Director of the Kansas City Symphony from 1999 to 2003. She launched her career in 1988 as Music Director of the London-based Mecklenburgh Opera, where over a span of eight years she programmed operas ranging from Mozart to 20th-century rarities, while commissioning world premieres from a host of contemporary composers. Anne Manson is distinguished by her dynamic podium presence, stylistic versatility, and ability to draw audiences into the inner world of the composer.

Piano soloist Gabriela Martinez has performed as orchestral soloist, chamber musician, and recitalist at such venues as Carnegie, Avery Fisher and Alice Tully Hall and has appeared as soloist with the Chicago, New Jersey, Fort Worth, Pacific, and San Francisco symphonies. An avid chamber musician, she has collaborated with numerous musicians and ensembles including Itzhak Perlman, and the Takacs quartet. Ms. Martinez has won numerous national and international prizes and awards. Her most recent accomplishments include first prize and audience award at the Anton Rubinstein International Piano Competition in Dresden. She was a semifinalist at the 12th Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, where she also received a Jury Discretionary Award. She earned her Bachelor and Master of Music degrees from The Juilliard School as a full scholarship student of Yoheved Kaplinsky, and her doctorate in Germany with Marco Antonio de Almeida. Since 2008, Ms. Martinez was appointed Concert Artist Faculty at Kean University.

Pre Concert Exhibit Opening Reception: RADICALIZING THE EDGE

The Edge can be a precarious place. Somewhere between order and chaos, where things can evolve, change and become the New--a horizon between Inside and Outside. A place where opposites can coexist, and where even with well defined parameters, this Edge can change into a state of mind and become a painting. Early Egyptian painters included an "Edge" in their wall paintings. A horizon line to stand on and navigate the picture plane. This horizon line gave their paintings a grounding and shallow third dimension. A place for the eye to follow the action. Often defined as two dimensional, ultimately a painting is multi-dimensional having space and time appearing as momentary and endless. This flexibility allows the artist great freedom of expression and to dwell in possibility. The Edge has become a necessary part of my subject matter. A way to be tethered while floating in space and paint. The edges are often broken into modules. These modules do not travel far from their source. The wall acts as the anchor and backdrop. The paintings are horizontal and vertical at one and the same time.

Bonnie Maranz, MA, BA, Certified NJ Art Teacher and exhibiting artist is also a Member of the Arts Council Advisory Board at Kean University.
